KUALA LUMPUR: Abd Majid Yusof, 73, used to ferry two of his children at a time on his motorcycle to their tuition classes.

“When there was not enough money for their schooling needs, I would pawn jewellery or do whatever it takes,” said the former Public Works Department driver from Kelantan.

Abd Majid, who was among five people who received the Maulidul Rasul award from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin yesterday, has 16 children, 87 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

His parenting style of “being firm but not hard” on his children is the key to their success in life. Most of them succeeded in entering universities.
